Preventing Slips And Falls During The Summer

SlipFallReport

The weather is heating up and pool parties and barbecues beckon. If you live in Florida, you’ll likely be inviting friends and family over soon for some fun in the sun. But before you do, you may want to inspect your home and look for any hazards that could cause slips, trips, and falls.

Indeed, the summer months bring about dangers that could cause your guests to take an unexpected trip to the ER. Pools create puddles, which can mean slippery surfaces. Plus, after heavy rains and other bad winter weather, you may have other outdoor hazards that could cause injury accidents.

Slips and falls often happen in the workplace and tend to cause broken bones, head trauma, or more. These accidents can happen at home as well, so before you send out the invites to your upcoming summer party, be sure to assess the inside and outside of your home for dangers. After all, you are responsible for the safety of your guests. If they are injured while on your property, they can sue you for damages.

Indoors

Be on the lookout for any tripping hazards, such as rugs, clutter, and cords. How are the floors? If there are any spills, make sure they are cleaned up promptly. Any loose stairs? If so, they should be fixed promptly.

Outdoors

For many homeowners the focus should be on the pool area. The areas surrounding a pool can get very slippery. You will need to make sure guests walk carefully around the pool. This is especially true since, during the summer, many people wear sandals and flip flops, which are not the safest types of footwear.

You will want to make sure other outdoor areas are safe as well. All clutter should be cleared. There should be no tripping hazards. Check the paved areas to ensure there are no large cracks that can cause trips.

If you plan to party late into the night, you should ensure that your outdoor area has plenty of lighting so guests can see where they are going. Check to make sure areas are well-lit. You may need to replace bulbs or add more lighting as needed.

Right before the party, you may notice issues that you could not fix in time. In these cases, you will need to warn guests of the dangerous conditions. That way, they can stay safe and avoid injury.
